As the newest addition to the team, Gold Coast-based Kiwi Craig Baird helped the VIP Petfoods Racing team to a fantastic start to the 2006 championship by winning the opening round of the Wright Patton Shakespeare Carrera Cup at the Clipsal 500 in Adelaide.
Craig's second place position in Race 1 giving him the chance to get to the front of the grid, where he capitalised on his chances with a great start in Race 2 which enabled him to hang on for the checkered flag. He topped this off with a Race 3 victory to giving himself a six-point lead in the championship and the team a great confidence boost for the rest of the season.
Klark Quinn had a good round at the Clipsal showing excellent speed in the first two races of the weekend with a top 10 finish in Race 1 and an even more impressive sixth place in Race 2. A radiator hose malfunction resulted in a disappointing finish to the round with a DNF but Klark has definitely proved over the weekends racing that he will be well in contention for this years remaining events with some impressively consistent lap times.
Entering the event as one of the only two drivers in the field to have started all 78 races in the Carrera Cup over its first three seasons, Tony Quinn had a lap eight incident in the first race with Paul Freestone which led to a DNF. Starting Race 2 from the back of the grid, Tony drove well to reach 16th position in Race 2 and 13th position in the last race of the round.
The team is now in preparation for the Foster’s Formula 1 Australian Grand Prix, a non championship round for Carrera Cup Australia.
