When the time comes for us to start making decisions for our pet’s future, we often find ourselves dealing with very conflicting emotions.
How will I know when the time is right?
What do I do when I have made the decision to euthanase?
What happens next?
How will I cope?
These are just a few of the questions going through our minds at this difficult time.
Our pets are very close to us and in many ways will “tell” us when their life is getting too hard for them. These signs and advice from your vet will give you a good indication of when the time is right. I often say to people that when their pets no longer get joy from the things they loved to do, like dinner time or going for a walk, then we have to seriously consider our options. Ultimately we do the BEST we can for our pets and the BEST is all we can do. It is not unusual to feel some guilt at making this decision, but ultimately allowing our best friend to pass with dignity, with someone who loves them by their side, and in a peaceful manner has to be a wonderful thing.
Once our pet has passed we need to allow ourselves time to grieve. Grieving the loss of a pet is a very natural thing and it can take some time before we can begin to move on. We all grieve differently and there is no right or wrong. Whatever feels right for you is ok. We need to remember to celebrate our pets’ life and the joy they have given us, but also to remember the love we gave to them made a difference to their lives too.
