Headlines in the news recently have highlighted that imported pet food products using chicken as the primary ingredient, have been linked to reports of kidney damaging illnesses in dogs around Australia. These reports have suggested that both high levels of harmful bacteria and the chemical melamine have been found in some pet food products manufactured overseas and imported into Australia.
The ABC ran a story on the 9th of December 2008 that featured the Australian Veterinary Association warning dog owners to immediately contact vets if their dogs show symptoms of kidney problems after eating pet treats that have been manufactured overseas. When interviewed by the ABC, Australian Veterinary Association President Mark Lawrie was quoted as stating that dogs may be drinking and urinating a lot, be unusually lethargic or vomiting.
